60 seconds. Real workflow. From shortlisted KPIs to shareable prototype.
Stop wasting design cycles
Most dashboard projects burn weeks on the wrong design. The team builds a 'real' dashboard in the BI tool, takes it to stakeholders, gets a long list of changes, rebuilds, repeats. By the time it's finally signed off, the original deadline is a memory and the team is tired of seeing the same data.
- Engineering hours lost rebuilding dashboards stakeholders never wanted
- Stakeholder fatigue from review cycles that all feel the same
- Live deployment with measures that quietly missed the brief
Prototype first. Align first. Build once.
WHERE THIS FITS IN THE ROKS METHOD
ROKS is a 7-step method for designing KPIs that get used. The Prototyping module covers Step 6 – clear, simple visual design and stakeholder alignment.
How it works

Step 1
Pick KPIs from your tree
Select shortlisted KPIs – or every KPI – from any tree in your workspace. The prototype inherits the structure.

Step 2
Generate the prototype
Use AI first draft to assemble a starting point, or build manually using grid templates and IBCS-style components.

Step 3
Share for stakeholder feedback
Send a real-time link. Stakeholders comment without setting up an account. You iterate.
Everything you need to design with confidence
Built for analysts, performance leads and BI designers who want professional dashboard outputs without the production-tool overhead.
BUILD

AI first draft
Describe what you need. AI assembles a first-pass prototype from your shortlisted KPIs.

KPI tree to prototype
Pick KPIs directly from any tree. The prototype inherits the structure.

Grid templates
Start from professional layouts designed for executive dashboards and operational reports.
REFINE

Granular property control
Adjust every chart, table and label. No black-box behaviour.

Typography and layout
Fine control over fonts, weights, spacing and alignment.

Sample data with controlled randomization
Test how your design handles real-world data variation – without waiting for live data.

KPI detail views
See KPI metadata while you design, so chart-type decisions are informed.
COMMUNICATE

Heading objects
Standardised heading hierarchy for clear reading order.

Commentary objects
Insert AI-generated or hand-written commentary that explains what the data means.

Table options
Multiple table styles for when a chart isn't the right answer.
Real-time review – without the friction
Share a prototype via a single link. Stakeholders comment without setting up an account. You see comments live as they're added. No PDF round-tripping. No 'final_FINAL_v3.pptx'.

Export when you need to
Generate clean PDFs and PNGs for stakeholders who prefer offline review, or for filing the design alongside the project record.

Inspired by IBCS and ISO 24896 principles
The Prototyping module follows the design conventions of IBCS (International Business Communication Standards) and aligns with the principles of ISO 24896. Charts default to formats that support clear decision-making rather than visual novelty. KPI Tree Studio is not formally certified against either standard – we use them as our design backbone.
About ISO 24896. ISO 24896 is an international standard for the presentation of organisational performance indicators. It sets out conventions for how KPIs should be visualised, labelled and contextualised so readers can interpret them quickly and consistently. The Prototyping module applies these conventions as design defaults wherever they support fast, decision-ready output.
Learn about IBCS →Good dashboards don't happen by accident. They happen by design.
Included in every paid plan
The full Prototyping module – including AI first draft and AI commentary generation – is included on both Pro and Black Belt plans. Black Belt graduates get the same software at a discounted rate, plus access to course materials and direct guidance from Bernie.
